The 150 buyers of the $2.6 million Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar will have to wait until 2019 to actually climb into one of the 1,000-horsepower, hybrid race-car beasts. But at least when they do, they know it will fit.
That’s because the British luxury-car brand is promising to custom-fit the buyer/driver into his or her own individualized cabin of the new car. And there are some very good reasons for that.
First, if you’re paying that much money for a car with its V-12 engine assisted by an electric motor and a design that looks like the rich child of the DeLorean in Back to the Future, customization should be the least of your demands. Aston Martin should come up with your own color and interior scent as well.
But second, in the case of the Valkyrie, custom fitting is actually a requirement for driving the vehicle. As Bloomberg explains, “The cabin, which sits deep in the Valkyrie’s insectoid frame, is an intimate triangle, flat behind the passenger’s and driver’s backs, and tapering to a point far ahead where the two occupant’ feet almost meet. There is no space, not even a cupholder, between the seats [and] only the pedals and multibutton steering wheel are adjustable.”
Another feature it won’t have: any sort of audio system, as the only thing drivers will be able to listen to is a 6.5-liter V12.
Introduced at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California in August, the Valkyrie actually isn’t ready for a manufacturing trial yet because some components, such as for the hybrid motor, aren’t finalized, and the company is still tweaking the car’s high-speed stability.
“They’re excited,” Aston Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman told the publication about owners in the queue for the car. “They’re literally 150 boys and girls waiting for Christmas.”
